This October The Limpopo Healing Journey Calls South Africans Home To Heal

For three days in October, Polokwane is asking a country to do something modern life rarely allows: come home, and rest.

The Limpopo Healing Journey, a three-day Convention wrapped around a one-day Healing Garden Festival, opens on 9 October 2026 at Sun Meropa Hotel and Outdoor Arena in Polokwane, running through to 11 October. The Festival day falls on 10 October, World Mental Health Day, and organisers expect between 700 and 1 000 people through the gates on that single day alone, alongside 200 delegates travelling in for the full three-day Convention.

The event carries a tagline that doubles as its argument: come back home and heal, the land that remembers. It is built on the idea that for the South Africans who left Limpopo for work in Johannesburg, Pretoria and beyond, healing is not something to be imported. It is something to return for.

That homecoming is one of three stories organisers are asking the country to pay attention to this October. The first is mental health, reframed through an African lens and timed to land on the one day a year the world stops to talk about it. The second is reverse migration, the pull of home on people who built careers elsewhere and are beginning to ask what it cost them. The third is tourism: Limpopo, backed by a Limpopo Tourism Agency mandate, positioning itself as Africa’s medicinal wellness destination, with the Healing Journey as its opening argument.

Delegates will move through The Village, a nourish dinner built around communal food; Kgoro Sessions, facilitated conversations held in the round with no stage and no hierarchy; a full main-stage programme; and the Ancient Long Table, a gala dinner led by chef Chris Sebola that closes the weekend.

“We are not importing a wellness model that was never built for us. We are going back to the ones that already worked, the ones our grandmothers used before anybody called it self-care. This is not therapy speak. This is us, remembering.”

The countdown to Polokwane now runs through two dates already on the national calendar: Heritage Day on 24 September, and World Mental Health Day on 10 October. Organisers are using the weeks between them to make the case that heritage is not only what a family keeps. It is also what it is finally allowed to put down.

“Every family has the one who holds it together, the daughter who never gets asked how she is doing because everyone assumes she is fine. This weekend is built for her specifically. Coming home is allowed to be about her, for once.”

said Khanyisa Florence Malahlela

Tickets for the Healing Garden Festival are on sale now through Quicket, with one-day access from R690 General Access VIP R1500 Three -Day R4500 (Sharing) and R5000 (Non-Sharing). Given the scale organisers are planning for, they are encouraging early booking rather than a walk-up on the day.

Spokespeople, including Malahlela, are available for interview in the lead-up to the event, and media accreditation is available for 9 to 11 October.
