Makosi Ignite Helps Address Period Poverty This Mandela Day
This Mandela Day, Makosi Ignite supported a sanitary pad donation initiative to help provide menstrual hygiene products to girls across South Africa.
The initiative formed part of Makosi Ignite, Makosi’s global impact initiative focused on creating opportunities through education, health, social development, and environmental action.
For many girls, access to sanitary products remains a barrier to attending school consistently. According to the Dis-Chem Million Comforts Campaign, teenage girls can miss up to 20% of their schooling due to a lack of access to sanitary pads. The effect reaches far beyond missed lessons. It can affect confidence, participation in school life, and a learner’s ability to stay engaged in her education.
Education is the first area of focus for Makosi Ignite. Through partnerships and community initiatives, Ignite supports young people at critical stages of their educational journey, helping to create access to opportunities that can shape their future.
“Education opens doors, but many young girls face challenges that should never stand in the way of learning,” says Tanya Grota, CFO & CPO at Makosi. “A packet of sanitary pads may seem small, but it can make a real difference to a girl trying to stay in school, focus on her studies, and participate fully in everyday life. Supporting initiatives like Million Comforts is one way we can help remove barriers and create opportunities.”

The campaign also reflected the connection between several Ignite pillars. Access to sanitary products supports health and wellbeing, helps girls remain engaged in their education, and contributes to stronger communities over time.
Makosi employees across South Africa donated their 67 minutes by taking part in the campaign as part of the company’s Mandela Day activities, contributing to a cause that continues to have a direct impact on learners throughout the country.
Mandela Day is built on the idea that small actions matter. Every donation helps provide a girl with access to a basic necessity that can support her education, dignity, and future.
We encourage South Africans to join us in supporting the Dis-Chem Million Comforts Campaign. By contributing, you are helping remove a barrier that prevents many girls from reaching their full potential. It’s a small action that can have a lasting impact on a young person’s life.
