When Technology Teaches, Humanity Must Lead
As AI takes on a greater role in delivering knowledge, teachers remain essential in developing the judgement, resilience and character students need to thrive.
Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing how people create, communicate and learn. Its ability to generate content, explain complex concepts and provide immediate feedback has also raised an important question for schools: if AI can teach, what is a teacher for?
According to Colin Northmore, Executive Headmaster of Evolve Online School, the rise of AI does not make teachers less relevant. Instead, it highlights the qualities that have always made exceptional teachers indispensable.
“AI can deliver information, personalise activities and help identify gaps in a student’s understanding, but teaching has never been limited to the transfer of knowledge,” says Northmore. “Great teachers interpret, adapt, encourage and connect. They understand the person behind the academic performance.”
His reflections were prompted by a recent conversation with his daughter, an artist concerned about the effect of AI-generated content on the creative industries. Music, visual art, writing and other creative professions are already experiencing the impact of technology that can produce content within seconds.
“I share her concern that low-effort, mass-produced AI content could undermine the livelihoods of people whose creativity has always been their greatest asset,” Northmore explains. “However, the conversation also made me question whether we are focusing on the right distinction.”
Automation or collaboration?
The most meaningful distinction may not always be between work created by a human and work produced using AI. It may lie between passive automation and purposeful collaboration.
Northmore recently used AI to assist in developing a marketing strategy and campaign for a new offering at Evolve Online School. The process involved evaluating ideas, rejecting weak suggestions, combining useful concepts and repeatedly refining the output.
“The experience did not feel like replacing creativity. It felt like practising it,” he says. “The quality of the outcome depended far less on the intelligence of the technology than on my ability to recognise what was useful, what was mediocre and what was missing.”
Simply asking AI to generate content and publishing the first response requires little human judgement. Using the technology through repeated refinement until the result reflects a person’s purpose, insight and values is a different process entirely.
“The first approach is automation. The second is collaboration,” says Northmore. “AI should not be viewed only as a technology. It can also become a medium through which people think, create and solve problems.”
Teaching remains a deeply human act
This distinction is particularly important in education because teaching is, at its heart, both creative and relational.
Every lesson requires teachers to observe how students respond and adjust their approach accordingly. Effective teachers recognise confusion before it is expressed, change direction when an explanation fails to connect and understand when a student needs encouragement rather than additional pressure.
“Teachers respond not only to the curriculum, but also to the human beings in front of them,” Northmore says. “Their role requires empathy, judgement and an understanding of the individual student. Those qualities cannot be reduced to the delivery of information.”
AI nevertheless has the potential to strengthen education considerably. It can help identify where a student’s understanding began to break down, provide targeted practice and offer explanations suited to individual needs. Immediate feedback can also allow students to revisit difficult concepts without feeling embarrassed or rushed.
“These capabilities are extraordinary, but they are not the purpose of education,” Northmore explains. “Education should help young people develop the judgement, resilience, self-awareness and agency needed to shape their own futures.”
Knowledge is abundant, but wisdom is not
Qualities once described as soft skills are becoming increasingly valuable in an AI-driven world. Critical thinking, communication, curiosity, emotional intelligence and adaptability will influence how successfully young people navigate their studies, future careers and relationships.
Access to information does not automatically produce understanding. Students still need trusted adults who can help them question what they encounter, assess the credibility of information and recognise the consequences of their choices.
“Knowledge is becoming increasingly abundant. Wisdom is not,” says Northmore. “Young people need teachers who can help them interpret information, think independently and make responsible decisions.”
Responsible AI integration could ultimately give teachers more time to focus on the work that technology cannot perform. Digital tools may support routine instruction, feedback and administration, while teachers concentrate on building relationships, inspiring curiosity, nurturing confidence and developing character.
The future of education should therefore not be framed as a choice between teachers and technology. AI should be used deliberately to strengthen teaching while preserving the human connection at the centre of meaningful learning.
“The real opportunity is not to make teachers less important,” Northmore concludes. “It is to give them more time to do the work that only humans can do. AI may be able to deliver a lesson, but a teacher helps shape the person receiving it.”
As schools continue to navigate the possibilities of artificial intelligence, the central question is no longer whether AI can teach. The more important question is which aspects of instruction technology should support and which must remain profoundly human.
