For much of the last century, the dream car was defined by excess: oversized engines, thirsty cylinders and aggressive grilles. Prestige was measured by how much attention a badge could command, and how loudly a vehicle could announce itself to the world. That era of flamboyance is running its course.
In its place, a more restrained sensibility has taken root. Modern luxury is increasingly defined by the peace of mind that comes from living and driving consciously.
Where sales conversations once centred on cylinder counts and nought-to-100 times, today’s buyers ask different questions. How clean is the air entering the cabin? How does this vehicle protect my family if something goes wrong? What does it cost the planet over its lifetime, not just at the pump?
There’s a single Swedish word for this mindset: Omtanke. It translates loosely to “care” or “consideration,” but its literal meaning is “to think again.” As a design philosophy, Omtanke is an attempt to replace decadence as the measure of luxury with something more deliberate, an approach that treats safety, wellness and environmental responsibility as the highest expressions of what a car owner values, rather than as compliance boxes to tick. Safety as an act of generosity
This isn’t a new posture for Volvo to adopt for the moment. It’s closer to a return to form. When Volvo engineer Nils Bohlin patented the three-point seatbelt in 1959, the company gave the patent away, free, to every competing manufacturer. The commercial case for keeping it closed was obvious. Volvo did the opposite, on the basis that protecting human life mattered more than owning the invention.
That same instinct now shows up in how the cars are built, just with different tools. Volvo remanufactures dozens of component groups, from engines to turbochargers, rebuilding each to original specification using around 85% less raw material and 80% less energy than producing the part from new. It’s the same generosity as 1959, aimed at the planet instead of the person in the next seat.
Materials tell the same story. Volvo’s newest electric models are built using close to a third recycled aluminium and meaningful shares of recycled steel and polymers by weight, alongside FSC-certified wood in the cabin. The battery in these cars carries a digital passport, a verifiable record of where its raw materials came from and how the battery is ageing, so its condition and origin can be checked rather than taken on trust.
The safety systems follow the same logic. Pilot Assist, Volvo’s driver support system, combines adaptive cruise control with steering support to hold the car’s position in its lane and manage following distance on longer drives, easing the physical load on the driver without removing them from the loop. It’s a small, unglamorous piece of engineering. It’s also the kind of thing that matters more on a long trip than any amount of horsepower.
Safety, occupant wellbeing and environmental responsibility aren’t three separate initiatives running in parallel. At Volvo, they’re treated as one principle, applied to three different problems.

This shift resonates in the South African market specifically. Local premium buyers are asking for the same things buyers everywhere are asking for: genuine long-term value, strong safety performance, and a lower running cost, both financial and environmental.
That plays out differently depending on the drive. In the city, it looks like commuting in pure electric mode, with none of the tailpipe emissions or fuel-price exposure of the old dream car. On the open road, on a run like Johannesburg to Cape Town, it looks like Pilot Assist quietly doing the tedious part of the drive, leaving the driver less fatigued at the other end. Different use cases, same underlying idea: a car that gives something back, rather than just taking a badge for granted.
The modern dream car is the one that answers the harder questions without drama: it protects the people inside it with technology that’s actually been engineered for the job, it accounts for what happens outside it through material choices that hold up to scrutiny, and it makes the everyday drive less demanding rather than more of a performance.
The brands that will matter most over the next decade are the ones that built their identity around safety, human-centred design and responsibility from the start, rather than adding it later as a marketing layer. For Volvo, that isn’t a repositioning. It’s the same idea the company has held since 1959, applied to a wider set of problems. Omtanke, in the end, is just what it sounds like: caring enough to think again.
