Ford Deepens Investment in South Africa’s Future Entrepreneurs Through New Community Resiliency Challenge
The 2026 Enactus South Africa National Exposition once again showcased the power of student-led innovation, entrepreneurship and social impact, with Nelson Mandela University’s Batho Pele BioLoop Africa Farm project taking top honours as the 2026 Enactus South Africa National Champion.
The initiative transforms food, organic and plastic waste into sustainable resources using technologies such as artificial intelligence, hydroponics and circular farming systems. By tackling food insecurity, unemployment and environmental sustainability through an innovative entrepreneurial solution, the project will now represent South Africa at the Enactus World Cup in Sao Paulo in November, where the team will compete against the world’s leading student enterprises.
Ford South Africa congratulates the Nelson Mandela University team on its outstanding achievement and looks forward to supporting its journey to the Enactus World Cup as part of an expanded partnership with Enactus South Africa.
Ford also reinforced its commitment to developing South Africa’s next generation of entrepreneurs through the Ford Community Resiliency Student Challenge, an evolution of the long-running Ford College Community Challenge that has empowered student innovators for more than a decade.
Announced during the Enactus South Africa National Exposition, the challenge reflects Ford’s continued focus on supporting student-led enterprises that strengthen communities through entrepreneurship, innovation and sustainable business solutions. The initiative forms an important part of Ford’s ‘ECD to Vocation’ education development strategy.
“The challenges facing South Africa require innovative thinking, entrepreneurial action and strong partnerships,” said Dudu Nxele, who leads Corporate Social Responsibility and the work of Ford Philanthropy at Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa.
“The Ford Community Resiliency Student Challenge is about far more than recognising great ideas. It is about helping young entrepreneurs transform those ideas into sustainable businesses that create opportunity, strengthen communities and leave a lasting impact for generations to come,” she said.
The challenge forms part of Ford Philanthropy’s global commitment to supporting community resilience through education, entrepreneurship and practical problem-solving.
This year’s Ford Community Resiliency Student Challenge awarded a total of US$9,000 in grant funding to three outstanding student enterprises whose projects address pressing social and economic challenges.
Third Prize – US$1,000
The University of Cape Town secured third place with DesignLynk, a specialised online marketplace connecting professional CAD designers and engineers with clients across Africa requiring technical design services.
The platform enables clients to source verified design professionals, manage projects from concept to completion while creating new economic opportunities for technical talent while addressing growing demand for engineering expertise throughout the continent.
Second Prize – US$3,000
The University of the Free State QwaQwa Campus received second place for Nexa Pals, an interactive web application introducing children aged 10 and older to computer programming through gamified learning.
Designed for schools, educators and young learners, the platform combines instant feedback, collaboration and self-paced learning to make coding accessible and enjoyable. Its business model includes school subscriptions, after-school programmes, sponsored partnerships, premium content and coding workshops, creating a scalable solution that equips young South Africans with future-ready digital skills.
First Prize – US$5,000
The University of KwaZulu-Natal claimed first place with MyPanic, an innovative freemium mobile safety application designed to improve student safety.
Responding to growing concerns around gender-based violence and crime, MyPanic provides users with instant emergency assistance, real-time alerts and wearable device integration. The platform connects students, parents, universities and emergency responders through live location sharing and coordinated incident response, while offering universities subscription-based campus safety tools and anonymized data insights.
By shifting campus safety from a reactive to a proactive and connected approach, the project demonstrates how technology can create safer learning environments.
Investing beyond the competition
This year also marks a significant expansion of Ford’s partnership with Enactus South Africa. Recognising that success extends beyond competition day, Ford will provide hands-on support to the 2026 Enactus South Africa National Champions as they prepare to represent the country at the Enactus World Cup in November.
Ford experts will work alongside the Nelson Mandela University team to refine its presentation, strengthen its financial reporting, enhance its marketing strategy and prepare for the international competition.
“We want South Africa’s National Champions to compete with confidence on the world stage,” said Nxele.
“By sharing the expertise that exists across our own organisation, we hope to help these young entrepreneurs present the very best version of themselves and their businesses.”
Ford will also sponsor the National Champions’ airfare to the Enactus World Cup, continuing its long-standing commitment to helping South Africa’s brightest young entrepreneurs showcase their innovations internationally.
Mobility creates opportunity
In another milestone for the partnership, Ford has donated a Ford Everest to Enactus South Africa, replacing the organisation’s long-standing reliance on hired vehicles.
The vehicle will enable the Enactus team to travel more efficiently to universities across South Africa, conduct project audits, mentor student enterprises and strengthen support for institutions, including those in rural and underserved communities.
Rather than representing simply another vehicle on the road, the Everest will become a practical tool that helps Enactus reach more students, nurture more enterprises and extend its impact across the country.

Every journey it makes has the potential to unlock another idea, inspire another entrepreneur and strengthen another community. That is the kind of generational impact we are proud to support.”
